A study of UK's 25 busiest airports has revealed worst offenders when it comes to delayed flights.

On average, it was found that all flights from UK airports run around 15 minutes late.

The airport which had the single worst record on flight delays for the last 12 months was London Luton, with flights leaving almost 20 minutes late on average.

Gatwick, Jersey and Durham Tees Valley airports followed closely behind, with average delays of between 18 and 19 minutes.

Heathrow was reported as being the airport with the shortest delays, although on average, departing flights were still taking off around 11 minutes behind schedule. Creditable mentions go to Leeds Bradford, Belfast City and London City airports.

On the face of it, it appears as if all the airports on this list are doing a pretty poor job when it comes to timekeeping, but comments from the Airport Operators Association may cast some light on the real reasons behind these consistent flight delays. They have suggested that outdated airspace infrastructure is at the heart of the problem, greatly limiting the efficiency of flights.

A spokesperson for London Luton Airport, the worst offender on the list, reiterated these thoughts, suggesting that the reasons behind so many delays did in fact lie outside of the airports control, specifically highlighting; air traffic control strikes, late arriving aircraft, bad weather and congested airspace as some of the major reasons for the delays in departures.
