Hey big spender - £860 per person is a lot! This includes spending money but, when you start multiplying it up, a family of 4 is shelling out nearly £3,500 per year on summer holidays. That’s an incredible 2 months salary for the average wage earner!

Looking at different regions of the UK, people in Wales and the West Midlands spend even more – over £1070 per person on average, whereas people in the North East and North West manage to spend just £660 per person. Even this is a lot though for the average wage earner.

No wonder people get annoyed at airports when their flights are delayed or cancelled. Each day is costing a family of 4 £250 so flight delays or cancellations will very quickly cost you a lot of money notwithstanding the disappointment.

So, how do you get your money back?

Well, you could try your Travel Insurance but sadly, most policies will only pay a poultry £50 per person per day compensation and then only if you suffer a flight delay or 7 hours or more!

Obviously, the best thing to do is find out the reason for the flight delay or cancellation. If it is something within the airline’s control then consider a claim for flight delay compensation. If you suffer a flight delay of 3 hours or more, each passenger could be able to claim up to €600. At current exchange rates that’s £428 per passenger! With the average spend of £860, that’s half the cost of your holiday back!

Worth thinking about isn’t it?
