BA flights return to normal | FairPlane UK image

After the IT failure at the weekend that led to the cancellation of thousands of flights and affected more than 75, 000 people, BA are now operating full schedules at Heathrow and Gatwick.

However, BA has warned that it may be some time before travellers and their luggage are reunited.

It is estimated that there are currently thousands of BA passengers across the globe who are currently trying to find out where their luggage is and how they might go about getting it back.

Passengers have been quick to take to social media to criticise Ba’s handling of the situation and in particular flagging up the fact that BA have been directing some passengers looking for assistance towards a premium phone line.

Despite the huge impact of the IT failure that affected all operating systems including baggage, operations and power processing, BA have claimed that it only took a few hours to fix the actual problem.

The GMB union has blamed the problem on technical staff being outsourced from the UK to India, although chief executive Alex Cruz has stated that there had been no redundancies or outsourcing in this area.

It seems that everyone isn’t convinced by that explanation though, with the BBC's technology correspondent, Rory Cellan-Jones, stating that one theory was that data was not synchronised when the systems were restored.

“It was designed by BA, but built and maintained by their third-party outsourcers including Tata Consulting Services. FLY is run in the BA contracted data centres."
