Thousands of travellers at London’s Heathrow and Gatwick Airports have had their flights disrupted as a huge IT crash has potentially left BA with a huge bill for flight delay compensation.

Scenes at the airports were described as chaotic with many passengers critical of BA because of the lack of available information.

An official statement from BA has advised passengers to stay at home and not bother coming to the airports affected. All flights scheduled for Saturday 27th May were cancelled.

The issues have been blamed on problems with a power supply and not, as some suspect, the result of a cyber-attack.

The GMB union has indicated that the problem could have been avoided if the airline had not decided to outsource its IT requirements.

Passengers affected will be offered the option of rescheduling their flights or accepting a refund.

As a result of these issues originating in the UK, delays have now been reported in Rome, Prague, Milan, Stockholm and Malaga due to the system failure.

Were you one of the thousands affected this weekend at either Heathrow or Gatwick? If your flight was cancelled or delayed by 3 hours or more, you may well be able to make a claim for flight delay compensation.

You can quickly check by entering a few details about your flight into our compensation calculator here.
