Ryanair announce further flight cancellations | FairPlane UK image

Ryanair has announced that it is to cancel a further 18,000 flights between November 2017 and March 2018.

34 routes including London Stansted to Edinburgh and Glasgow, Gatwick to Belfast, Newcastle to Faro, and Glasgow to Las Palmas have been temporarily suspended for the winter.

Over 400,000 passengers will be affected by the move.

Ryanair has announced that all customers affected by the move have already been contacted by email and have been offered a choice of either a refund of an alternative flight.

In addition, travel vouchers have also been offered to those affected. Customers who have booked one way flights will receive a voucher worth £40 and those who have booked a return will receive a voucher worth £80. The vouchers will enable the holder to get money off future flights booked with Ryanair between October 2017 and March 2018.

This new round of cancellations comes just as the furore surrounding the budget airlines first round of cancellations had begun to quieten down. Ryanair announced just over a week ago that up to 50 flights a day were to be cancelled, up until 31 October. Problems over the scheduling of pilots holidays have been blamed.

The airlines chief executive, Michael O’Leary announced this latest round of cancellations today, apologising publically to customers for the second time this month…

“We sincerely apologise to those customers who have been affected by last week’s flight cancellations, or these sensible schedule changes announced today”.

He went on to announce that there would be no further flight cancellations this winter or in the summer of 2018.

In regards to the issues around pilot’s holidays he stated that…

“We will start a new 12-month leave period on 1 January 2018 in full compliance with EU regulations and the IAA’s requirements.”

“In order to focus on repairing this rostering problem this winter, Ryanair will eliminate all management distractions starting with its interest in Alitalia,” the company said.
