Taking a break this May Bank holiday? | FairPlane UK image

If you’re planning on getting away from it all this bank holiday weekend, we hope you don’t have to deal with the kinds of problems that blighted travellers this time last year.

Historic flight data from May 2016 shows that anyone jetting off for a city break is likely to be faced with flight delays when visiting many of the most popular European destinations such as Barcelona, Mallorca and Rome. It is predicted that more than a third of flights to many major cities are likely to be delayed.

Destinations most afftected by flight delays

According to figures obtained from the Civil Aviation Authority, the top five destinations most affected by flight delays were as follows:

1. Barcelona - 34%

2. Mallorca - 33%

3. Rome - 33%

4. Milan - 32%

5. Rhodes - 31%

The figure alongside each city indicates the percentage of UK flights to that destination delayed during May 2016.

Despite delays proving to be so commonplace, many still do not realise that they can claim compensations for cancellations or delays of more than three hours. Research suggests that 95% of people, who are entitled to claim compensation, still don’t.

EU regulation state that passengers are entitled to compensation if a flight is delayed by more than three hours from an airport which is located in the European Union or was en-route to an EU member state.

The amounts of compensation available to passengers are fixed by EU law.
