Flight compensation available as Ryanair cancels flights | FairPlane UK image

Ryanair, the budget Irish airline, has announced that it is to cancel 40 to 50 flights every day for the next six weeks.  The move could affect up to 285,000 passengers.

The move is designed to improve the punctuality of flights according to an official statement from the airline.

In an announcement made on Friday, it referred to the fact that its punctuality had fallen below 80% in the first half of this month as "unacceptable".  It was also stated that it had to deal with a backlog of staff holidays before the end of the year.

Ryanair have suggested that less than 2% of its flights would be cancelled and in the long run the move would help it to achieve its desired annual punctuality target of 90%. Confrmation of the Ryanair flight cancellations can be found on their website.

All affected passengers will be offered the alternative flights, where possible, or a refund.

As you may have suspected, many passengers are far from happy about what they see as the relatively short notice that they’ve been given regarding the cancellations

We are aware of at least some passengers who have received a text messages from Ryanair, to let them know that their flights had been cancelled.

Ryanair has apparently already advised all of its customers that flights will be operating as scheduled unless they have received a cancellation email.

Flight compensation

Rules governing passenger rights in the EU say that if the airline is unable to offer a suitable alternative flight, they are required to book you one on a rival airline.

If no replacement flight is available or the customer prefers not to take up any of the options on offer, they should certainly be able to claim flight cancellation compensation.
