Ryanair counting the cost of flight cancellations | FairPlane UK / 20.09.2017
Not only has Ryanair lost the trust of many of their customers and created one of the biggest PR disasters in the travel industry, once the dust settles they may still have a bill for around £47M to settle.
This is an estimate of how much the airline might have to pay out following what’s widely been reported as the result of poor management of staff holidays by the budget airline.
At a press conference in Dublin, the airline’s chief Michael O’Leary claimed that pay-outs to passengers affected by the cancellations would total around £22m, but that is predicted to be more like half of what they will actually end up paying.
The airline has suggested that the reason behind their decision to cancel 2,100 flights was to improve punctuality which had fallen to as low as 80% in September.
ATC capacity delays and strikes, weather disruptions and increased holiday allocations to cabin crew and pilots are the root cause of this unacceptably poor timekeeping according to statements made by Ryanair.

For those whose flights have been cancelled, Ryanair is offering the option to either accept a full refund or an alternative flight ticket.
Passengers must be notified of their flight cancellation at least two weeks prior to departure, or they then become entitled to flight compensation under EU law.

In a 2016 report, consumer watchdog Which?, revealed that Ryanair has historically ignored more than half of all customer complaints, refusing to pay compensation in around 70% of cases that were perfectly valid.
