A summer of flight delays | FairPlane UK image

It’s pretty clear that based on the recent weather we’ve been having in the UK, that summer is now pretty much over and we’re rapidly heading towards autumn.

We this in mind we thought it timely to take a look back at the summer from a ‘delayed flight perspective’.

Flight delay compensation

Industry experts suggest that more than £145 million has been paid out in flight delay compensation to passengers affected by cancellations and late arrivals in summer 2017. That’s around £20 million more than was paid out during the same period (June 1 to August 31) in 2015.

With the recent news that Ryanair’s time keeping had fallen below 80% during the first two weeks of September, this doesn’t seem that surprising.

Of those passengers that suffered delays or cancellations, more than 400,000 were able to make claims for compensation.

To claim compensation for a flight delay, you need to have arrived at your final destination at least 3 hours after the planned arrival time.

Best and worst performing airports for fligth delays

As we’ve reported in recent weeks, London’s Gatwick Airport has topped the list for the greatest number of delays and cancellations, closely followed by Luton, Stansted, Birmingham and Manchester.

Glasgow, London City, Heathrow, Bristol and Edinburgh made up the list of the best performing airports in the UK when it comes to punctuality.
